Resilience

We are cultivating the capacity to tolerate difficult feelings, which also expands our capacity to experience greater joy.  Resiliency helps both therapists and clients to grow beyond their current comfort zone - to develop a fiercely compassionate and honest engagement with life.
— Leslie Davenport

Resilience is the ability to withstand, adapt and grow in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy and stress such as depression, family and relationship problems, bullying, death of a loved one. It is the ability to bounce back despite all the odds. Resilience is not something that some people have and others simply don’t. Resilience is in all of us and can be learned and developed in anyone!

The Helix

The helix shape (or spiral) is a symbol of resilience. It is found throughout nature. We find the helix in galaxies and weather patterns and in every living organism’s DNA. Sunflowers, vine tendrils, ferns, the shells of nautilus and snails, seahorses, the horns of antelopes and sheep, even our fingerprints all have the helix as their underlying structure. Many plants become a helix in order to pass through environmental challenges and explore more of their environment.

Because of its stability and strength, the helix is foundational to sacred architecture throughout the world from Precolumbian to Irish Neolothic Sites to churches and mosques. The helix has withstood the test of time, religion, biological and cultural influences. It is a symbol of evolution, growth and resilience.

In its very nature, the helix is the definition of resilience. Research demonstrates for us how this works. When a plant root comes across a barrier during its growth, it summons even more energy, flexibility, and work to create a helix. When faced with a challenge, the root’s response is to find a way. It does so by twisting and turning into a tightly woven formation of the helix, thereby conquering it’s former challenge and creating beauty and stability.

The Resilient Helix

Our team sees this as a symbol of adaptability, overcoming odds, and creating foundations for prospering through adversity. Dr. Court once said “If we didn’t have helices, we would all still be blobs!” Imagine! She describes the process beginning from our very conception we begin as 4 cells. As the helices continue to confront challenge after challenge, we continue to divide into 8 cells, then 16, and so on until finally we are a head and a tail and a human being. And the process does not stop once we are born! We continue on this path of challenge and overcome, challenge and overcome. At times we become more stuck than others, but with the helix as our guide we can begin to trust within our very nature to become victors over our struggles.

The Resilient Helix is a team of professionals who are here to help develop resilience in individuals and families in all stages of life - from Tots to Tall People. Each of us has an understanding and appreciation for development and life stages, and we all work with toddlers and preschoolers, teens, and adults transitioning through developmental challenges. Together we join our individualized experiences in order to bring a more comprehensive face of mental health.  Our unique backgrounds meet in one setting to establish one vision: connection.

Together, we envision a world of emotional reconnecting.  Not only to our society and our families, but to ourselves.  With an “anything is possible” attitude, we set out to ensure the age of connecting within relationships is not lost.
